The moment:
On September 1, 2022, German basketball experienced one of its most memorable moments: Dirk Nowitzki's number 14 was raised to the rafters of Cologne's Lanxess Arena amid thunderous applause and fireworks – the first player in FIBA history to receive this honor.
The artwork “Apotheosis” completes the Hercules comparison and Nowitzki's elevation to basketball Olympus. Nowitzki stands at the center, surrounded by those he paid tribute to in his acceptance speech – from Holger Geschwindner to the 2002 bronze medal team to former Mavs owner Mark Cuban. His first and last DBB games frame his rise. Above him is his number 14, while the spotlight symbolically lifts him into the Olympus.
With 153 international games, a silver and a bronze medal, and immortal dedication, Nowitzki leaves behind a legacy that will inspire generations – a basketball Hercules for eternity.
